Abstract
This action research investigates the role of student choice learning projects to determine the development of student research skills. The study was conducted in a technology infused, upper elementary multi-grade classroom using the intervention of genius hour. In brief, genius hour projects are student led research projects that are conducted in three phases: inquiry development, researching, and presentation of learning. The research evidence was collected using a mixed methodology design that indicated increases in student retention, engagement, and research skills. Data was collected through teacher observations, project rubrics, reading assessments, student feedback and conferences. Also, data revealed that technology facilitated students’ development of research skills, such as note taking, source ranking and collaboration. Furthermore, data reveals that students research skill development benefits from longer project timelines and uniformed project guidelines. Implications for the findings of this action research benefit educators who are interested in creating a student-centered, authentic and self regulated learning environment.
