Biography
Here are some facts about my life experiences that shaped my mindset about education. I am the oldest of six siblings, which taught me at a young age to be empathetic and caring. My dedication to my students has been shaped from my younger days, where love and caring for children meant accepting the different qualities and personalities of each child. I grew up in two border towns, one in Southern California called Calexico and the other Mexicali, in Baja California. (Noticed the clever word play with the town names.) From my childhood, I learned to embrace cultural diversity because I lived in two worlds divided by a physical and societal fence. Moving back and forth from the United States to Mexico, I began to understand how education provides opportunities of empowerment for all members of society. I decided at a young age to become a teacher because I wanted to help others. It might sound cheesy but it was difficult for me to see people who were discriminated based on their level of education or knowledge of language. Often I would see people who were treated indifferently because they only spoke Spanish. I realized that education has the power to change and empower our society. Not only as an educator, would I be able to embrace the cultural diversity of my students but I could model and teach acceptance of cultural diversity.
Furthermore, I attended San Diego State University and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Bachelors of Science in Public Administration. I am bilingual in Spanish and English. After graduation, I went to work in Puebla, Mexico were I worked as an English coordinator for a private bilingual catholic institution. I returned to Mexicali, Mexico to work at Cetys Universidad as an English Instructor and also worked at several private bilingual elementary schools. From my experience as an educator in Mexico, I learned how to create lessons based on the needs and schema of my students instead of a content-based lessons. Teaching through relevancy made subjects more fun to teach and my students were able to understand the content without much difficulty. There were many firsts, such as having my own classroom, conducting parent-teacher conferences in two languages, implementing American curricula with the curricular standards of Mexico, organizing field trips and much more.
Additionally, I graduated from University of San Diego with a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. My time at University of San Diego gave me the opportunity to divulge in my educational interests through discussions and projects with my professors and cohort. My placements in Tierrasanta and Santee allowed me to grow tremendously. In these settings, I was exposed and implemented project-based learning, differentiation, ed-tech, and 21st century skills in daily lessons. I am excited to continue growing in the area of educational technology with the help of my master teacher and colleague, Joe Kemery, In all, overcoming my learning obstacles as an educator and student has helped fuel my passion in helping others learn.
